Auditions – Play Reading Series

Reading Theater Project will hold auditions for the 2024 Play Reading Series. Please click the button below to register.

Auditions will be held Saturday, March 16, 2pm at Holy Cross United Methodist Church, 529 N. 5th Street, Reading, PA.  Free parking and the entrance are available at the back of the building, off the Church Street alley. 

Everyone will audition together, and we will provide scenes so actors can prepare in advance. 

Rehearsals are will be scheduled by the play’s director, typically evening or weekend times.  The performances will be in Reading, Pennsylvania at the GoggleWorks’ Boscov Theatre (200 Washington St., Reading).  Actors are paid a small stipend.

Holy Orders:

  • MARGARET DELANEY – 65
  • STEVE DELANEY, Margaret’s brother – 62
  • FEMALE Actor: Sister Ann, First Grade Nun, Helen, Edie
  • MALE Actor: John, Man (at Communion)
  • FEMALE Actor: Mother Superior, Mom, Delia, Lydia, Woman
  • (at Communion)
  • MALE Actor: Priest, Elmo, Bishop

Prospect Hill

  • Jacob Stichter (pronounced Stick-ter), thirties, a psychological therapist, recovering Mennonite, perpetually broke, bears a weakness for bourbon and salty chips, wears cardigans, a lot of green, and old jeans
  • Rex Isaak (Jacob’s husband), sixty-ish, retired pharmaceutical salesman, made a lot of money in the 80s and 90s, a big temper, wears tailored pants and blue ironed shirts even when spackling drywall
  • Ethan (Jacob’s client), early twenties, a Pepsi Bottling Co. employee, recovering addict, recovering Church of Christ congregant, a reader, wears a lot of red or perhaps just strong hints of it

Banshee

  • FATHER MACBRIDE A priest. Male-identifying, 50s or older. The character is Irish but the actor may be of any race or ethnicity.
  • FINN O’BRIEN An Irish soldier in the English army. Male-identifying, 20s. The character is Irish but the actor may be of any race or ethnicity.
  • NANCY DONOUGH A farmer. Female-identifying,. In the beginning of the play she is in her early 20s; at the end she’s in her 50s. The character is Irish but the actor may be of any race or ethnicity.
  • HUGH An American tourist in the present day. Played by the same actor who portrays O’BRIEN. HUGH is in his 30s or 40s, however.
  • BANSHEE The harbinger of death, shown as an old woman. Female-identifying, any adult age.
  • MARCIA An American tourist in the present day. Black, female-identifying, 30s or 40s.
  • JAMES An Irish tour guide in the present day. Can be played by the same actor who plays MACBRIDE.

Arachnothology (A Study of Spiders)

  • THE SPIDER WOMAN
  • AUNT NANCY / ATHENA
  • ARACHNE / CHARLOTTE
  • GWEN
  • MISS MUFFET
  • The characters are female/female-identifying. Spider Woman is the oldest, in her 60s at least. Aunt Nancy/Athena is the next oldest, followed by Arachne/Charlotte. Gwen and Miss Muffet are the youngest, late teens or early twenties.

REHEARSAL NOTES: 

  • Rehearsals for each play are expected to begin a few weeks before each reading.
  • We rehearse at Holy Cross UMC at 5th and Buttonwood in Reading, parking lot in the back.
